What a great book! The Unwanteds by Lisa Mcmann is a mixture of magic, fantasy, and imagination. They all fit perfectly together, especially with Lisa McMann’s understanding of what kids like! I liked the feeling of enjoying the book so much that I didn’t want to put the book down.
The story is about a land called Quill and a boy named Alex Stowe. Quill is ran by High Priest Justine who has some very strict rules. In Quill, High Priest Justine separates people by different categories, Unwanted, Necessary, and Wanted. You are Unwanted if you are artistic, musical, creative, or act. Alex is an Unwanted boy in Quill. Someone saw Alex drawing in the dirt and reported him to the governors. Necessary and Wanted people go on to live and go to college.
If someone is Unwanted they “burn” in the great lake of boiling oil. They judge people when they are thirteen years of age. But someone named Mr. Today created land past the gates of Quill named Artimé. In Artimé someone can do all the stuff they can’t do in Quill. But once they get good at that stuff they begin their magical warrior training and getting ready to fight Quill. “Quill prevails when the strong survive!” as the people of Quill say.
Mcmann knows how to really keep kids reading. She knows what kids like and how to keep them from disliking it because once you pick the book up, you can’t put it down! The book makes you feel like you’re living the same world Alex is living in. I recommend it for people who like magic and fantasy. Also, even if you don’t like those kinds of genres, I still would say to just give it a try.
