The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey by Steve Sheinkin is an outstanding book that consists of many jewish folktales. This book is a graphic novel so I would recommend it to readers that like short, easy reads rather than readers who like long chapter books with no pictures. I read a lot of fiction books and this is one of the best fiction books I have ever read. Even though I am Christian, I still loved every one of Rabbi Harvey’s adventures filled with jewish advice.
After Rabbi Harvey, the main character, finished school in New York, he traveled west to search for an adventure and hopefully work as a rabbi. His journey ended up taking him to Elk Spring, Colorado which is a small town in the Rocky Mountains. After he managed to outwit the mean and ruthless gang that had been ruling Elk Spring, the people invited Harvey to be Elk Spring’s rabbi. In Harvey’s adventures he solves disputes, tricks criminals into confessing, and offers many bits of wise and witty advice throughout the book. After solving a dispute or tricking a criminal into confessing, Rabbi Harvey became more and more famous throughout the west until people came to him daily to ask him about their disputes or questions about who had stolen something.
The Adventures of Rabbi Harvey is a great book for readers that are interested in a short, fictional graphic novel that is packed with adventure. I believe the pictures do a great job of making you understand what is going on and making you feel like you are part of Rabbi Harvey’s adventures.
