Zane and the Hurricane Book Review

Zane and the Hurricane is a great book. Zane and the Hurricane was written by Rodman Philbrick. This book is about a boy named Zane who had to try to survive through Hurricane Katrina. The question, however, is: Does Zane survive Katrina? By reading this book, you will find out! I like fantasy books, but this book was historical fiction. I still enjoyed reading it, though. Zane and the Hurricane tells a story about Katrina that will make you sad at times, happy at other times, and completely shocked at the most action-filled times.

Zane Dupree is a 12 year old boy who ends up at the wrong place at the wrong time. He, his mom, and his dog, Bandy, live in New Hampshire. One day, Zane is outside playing with Bandy. When he comes inside, his mom tells him that his great-grandmother is alive. Since Zane’s father died a long time ago, Zane is surprised to find out that there are any living relatives of his father. He and Bandy go to New Orleans to meet her. After a few days, Hurricane Katrina strikes! Lots of rain, wind, and flooding makes the experience even more terrifying. Zane, Bandy, and Zane’s great-grandmother try to escape Katrina on a bus, but Bandy jumps out of the window and runs away. Zane goes after Bandy, and eventually catches him. Then, he and Bandy go to Zane’s great-grandmother’s house, and try to find shelter in the attic from the rising water. Luckily, a musician named Trudell Manning and a girl named Malvina Rawlins save them before the water gets to them. In other parts of the adventure, they see poisonous snakes, dead people, floating junk, flooded buildings, gangs, drug dealers, people from the government, and other people trying to survive Katrina. To have a chance at surviving Katrina, Zane has to trust others, make new friends, and have courage. Although Zane’s visit to his great-grandmother’s house wasn’t what he had expected, he still had quite an adventure!

Zane and the Hurricane is a funny, but realistic story that gives a twist to an actual event. For example, one funny thing in the book is when Zane describes his great-grandmother by saying to himself, “She’s so wicked old and the canes look like weapons. …” Rodman Philbrick did a great job with combining information about a true, serious event with life lessons that need to be learned by everyone. Zane and the Hurricane is a story that makes you never want to put it down. I would recommend this book to people that like historical fiction, studying weather, or humor.
