Duke is a wonderful book full of heartbreak, bravery, and love. A historical fiction masterpiece by Kirby Larson. Any boy or girl will like it and learn from the message it carries. Hobie faces many difficulties that we face today. He also faces some that we do not have.
Hobie’s dad is in the army and Hobie wants to do his part in World War 2. He decides to give Duke a way to the canine defence force, also known as the K-9’s. While Duke is in California training and Hobie is at the home front these two share a bond that can never be broken. Hobie tries to befriend Max, a new boy at his school but Hobie messes that up too. Hobie finally makes up with Max and with Duke.
This book is compelling and leaves you feeling for the character. I give Duke five out of five stars and wish there were more books about Duke. Hobie and Duke give a great lesson that we can learn from. Courage, bravery, and love can help you and others. Duke is a good book with a great lesson.
