The Hypnotists by Gordon Korman is one of the best books I’ve ever read! Infact, I think this is my new favorite book! This book is realistic fiction bordering on fantasy. I tend to lean away from fantasy, but this was worth it!
In this book the main character Jackson (Jax) Opus has color-changing eyes that allow him to hypnotise people. At first he has no idea why his eyes change color. He starts seeing himself through other people’s eyes. Jax starts to think he’s hallucinating. Suddenly, he gets the opportunity to go to Sentia and Jax wonders if there is a connection between his hallucinations and this strange place. But then, Jackson starts to get bored at Sentia so he quits. The next day, Dr.Elias Mako, the founder of Sentia has a meeting with Jax’ parents. Jax finds out Sentia studies hypnotism and that Jax comes from a long line of hypnotist. He starts back up at Sentia and makes much progress. But one day, he completes something no one has done before, remote hypnotism. The next few days, Jax starts to get suspicious and finds out the truth about Dr.Mako. He quits again. Then Dr. Mako blackmails Jax into doing something for him. Jax then needs to stop Dr.Mako and save his family and friends from committing suicide! Gordon Korman shows that when some people have power they can misuse it and become power hungry.
The Hypnotists by Gordon Korman is for anybody who likes realistic fiction/fantasy and a good action packed story. This is specifically recommended for late elementary school and early middle school. In this book, Gordon Korman also offers a good life lesson that we can all learn from!
