In The Lightning Dreamer by Margarita Engle it is very poetic and dreamy it has a bit of everything, it has adventure, poetry, excitement, and a little bit of fantasy. It is about a girl who is trying to find love in a person who believes in the same rights as her, for freedom. It starts off with Tula, Tula is the main character. Tula has lots of imagination and is very brave and bold. She is in love with poetry.
Everyday she goes to the church to read with the nuns. Her cook, Caridad stayed after being released by her father but runs off after all the freedom poetry that Tula has read. Tula is glad that she is free but her mother not so much.
Tula’s father died but believed She does secret plays with the orphans based on her books but when her 14th Birthday is coming up her mother is getting ready for her marriage and picks a greedy slave catcher. When Tula doesn't want to marry him her mother sends Tula to her father's plantation. Oops I can’t tell you any more but read the book for your self. Enjoy the book I know I did!
